Candace Parker Hoping To Lead Team USA to Olympic Gold

Candace Parker is one of the most celebrated and well-known female basketball players on the planet. The hype started when Parker became the first Female player to dunk in a high school game and exploded when she went on to beat JR Smith, Rudy Gay and Josh Smith in the 2004 McDonalds all-American Dunk Contest. Candace Parker would go one to be the first female to dunk in the NCAA tournament and only the second player to dunk in a WNBA game, but it is her all round versatile play that is most impressive about the young LA Sparks player. After two NCAA Championships and tournament MVP’s at Tennessee Parker had a spectacular start to her WNBA career, going for 34 points, 12 rebounds, 8 assists, 2 steals and a block in her debut. She went on to win both the rookie of the year and league MVP awards, the only female player to ever achieve this and only the third professional American basketball player to do so. (The other two; Wilt Chamberlain and Wes Unseld, not bad company!)

The previous two seasons have been interrupted by injuries and the birth of her daughter but now Parker is healthy again and looking to lead Team USA to their fifth consecutive Olympic Gold Medal and her first. TCC caught up with Candace Parker after Team USA’s recent Olympic warm-up game vs GB in Manchester and asked her about their Olympic preparation, WNBA players competing globally and she tells us that how under FIBA rules it is no blood, no foul! Oh and of course we got a shout out for all of her Irish fans! Check out the interview below:
