The NBCC Freshers Tournament will be held in IT Carlow’s Barrow Centre again this year on the weekend of the 22nd and 23rd of November.
Last year there was a record entry of 12 Men’s and 12 Ladies teams and another maximum entry is expected this year. The tournament is run over two days with all the Finals on the Sunday afternoon. This is the fourth consecutive year that the tournament has been held in IT Carlow and with the use of St. Leo’s Secondary School there is an excellent gym to play the games. With 34 games played over the weekend there is always a high standard and here has been a host of nail biting games the past few years.
Tournament director and NBCC president Martin Conroy got in touch with TCC and had this to say: “The tournament is a fantastic way for new college athletes to get to know each other and to play competitive basketball in the early years of their college experience. We in the NBCC are delighted the tournament has progressed so much that we have had to turn teams away. Our hope is to be able to cater for more teams in the future but at the moment it will be a first come first served with regards to who we can have in the tournament. We would also like to thank The Courtside Collective for helping us promote this great tournament and look forward to working with TCC over the coming years with regards to our League Finals and Inter Varsity Tournament.”
The winners from last year were NUIG in the Men’s Cup. They defeated UCD on a score line of 46-39 with the MVP going to Ronan O’Sullivan from NUIG. The Ladies Cup went to UCC after they beat UL 45-23 with Emer Twohig picking the MVP. The Men’s Plate went to DCU beating the hosts IT Carlow 56-30 with Paddy Sullivan being awarded the MVP. Finally the Ladies Plate was won by DIT again the hosts were beaten in the Final on a score line of 50-30. Katie Black picked up the MVP.
